When is The First Day of Class for Schools in Deep East Texas?

As distant as the fall season may seem to us right now, Halloween-themed items have already started appearing in a few area stores. They may be jumping the gun on getting the skeletons and all things orange on the shelves, but there is no mistaking that back-to-school time is here.

It's mid-July and for some school districts that means we are just days away from teachers reporting back to work. Quite a few schools will be having their first day of class within the first week of August.

The landscape of the school calendar has experienced major changes over the past decade or two. I've counted nearly 20 Deep East Texas school districts that will be using some form of a 4-day week for the 2023-24 school year. For the most part, those are the schools that will be starting school the earliest for the upcoming semester.

It looks like Corrigan-Camden 'wins the award' for the earliest starting school (August 2), with Kennard just one day behind. Meanwhile, Central Heights ISD (August 28) is taking back to the days when schools waited until nearly Labor Day to return for the new year.
