(The Texas Department of Transportation/Lufkin (TxDOT) has provided this weekly update on area road projects)

The construction project at the A&NR Railroad Bridge on North Timberland Drive is continuing along with other projects throughout the nine-county Lufkin District that are scheduled for work and maintenance in the coming week.

Contractors have placed a temporary railroad bridge on BU 59 for railroad operations as crews work to pave the southbound main lanes of the roadway for limited traffic. Austin Bridge & Road, contractors for the $11.4 million project, will continue to drill shafts along with pouring concrete medians and installing storm drains. BU59/North Timberland Drive will remain closed to traffic at the project.

“There is a lot of local interest from motorists wanting to know when this roadway will be open to traffic again,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District. “We originally projected March 1 to be open to limited traffic; however, scheduling and drilling delays have pushed that back for a few weeks. The roadway should be open to limited traffic by the end of March as the project continues to completion, which should be late this year.”

Other construction and maintenance work planned for the coming week include:

ANGELINA COUNTY

  • US 59/SL 287: Construction crews continue milling and paving operations where the project ties into existing pavement at each end of the project. Workers are working to complete the U-turn bridges and landscaping has begun throughout the project.
  • FM 706 from US 69 North to SH 103 West: Crews will work to widen culverts and safety treat fixed objects. Motorists could experience delays.
  • Construction crews are scheduled to begin spraying the emulsified sealant on FM 58 from BU59 to SL 287, Business 69 from FM 58 (Chestnut Avenue) to SL 287, and 103 East from Atkinson Drive to Paul Street. The application helps to seal loose rocks in the asphalt. Motorists are advised to avoid the areas or be prepared for delays. Entry and exit to businesses in freshly sealed lanes are discouraged until the coating is completely dry, which under normal conditions will occur quickly.  Motorists could experience lane closures as the work is performed. Obey all signage, be prepared for delays and/or detours and be cautious of heavy equipment and work details in the areas. Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, weather permitting, and continue throughout the week.

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY

  • US 59/SL 224: Crews are placing storm sewer along US 59 in advance of widening US 59 at Spradley Street. Utility crews continue to relocate throughout the project. The southbound lanes have been widened to accommodate motorists through a detour on US 59 as traffic is shifted. Asphalt and road base is being removed from the northbound lanes and southbound widening is being excavated in preparation for cement treatment this week. Motorists could experience lane closures.

  • Construction on FM1878/Starr Avenue is continuing as crews work to construct curb and gutter and prepare for a second layer of asphalt to be placed next week.
