Some of the most well-known country songs never reached No. 1. Heck, a few didn't even break the Billboard Top 40.

Shania Twain's most famous song wasn't a "hit" if you define the word in terms of songs that reached the top of the country airplay chart. Sugarland's most well-known song didn't top the charts either. Neither did career-defining songs for Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton, Little Big Town and Big & Rich.

Chris Stapleton's most well-known song barely dented the charts, and Kid Rock's best-known country effort didn't break the Top 20. There's no shame in a No. 2, especially when the song goes gold or platinum for 500,000 or one million in sales. Who is going to deny that "Gentle On My Mind" is a country hit? Glen Campbell's song only peaked at No. 30 in 1967.
