Danielle Bradbery's new single, "Goodbye Summer," is not only a collaboration with Thomas Rhett, it's a song he helped write.

"Goodbye Summer" is actually a re-imagining of "Hello Summer," a song from Bradbery's sophomore album, I Don't Believe We've Met. Rhett wrote that song with Rhett Akins, Julian Bunetta and the Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston, and it explored the ups and downs of a summer love. "Goodbye Summer" is a bittersweet take on the same thing, but with Rhett joining in to give the male perspective on the subject matter.

"Goodbye Summer" retains the pop-country musical elements that made "Hello Summer" such an alluring record. However, Rhett's presence on the track turns it from a one-sided narration of a short-but-intense love affair into a song in which both lovers are lamenting their shared loss, and the give-and-take of Bradbery and Rhett's voices singing different verses and then joining on the choruses gives the record added depth and appeal.

"Hello summer, goodbye to my heart / Blue skies and blue eyes are a hell of a way to start / Letting it go would be the hardest part / Hello summer, goodbye to my heart," they sing in the chorus.

“Thomas Rhett was one of the first mentors I had in Nashville and we’ve become really good friends over the years. He's like a big brother to me, so to be able to record a song he wrote was incredibly special,” Bradbery says in a press release. “I remember when I first heard the demo, I actually jammed to it with Thomas Rhett's vocal on it as if it wasn't even going to be mine. Now to have the opportunity to re-record the song with him — it’s a dream scenario.”

"It's been fun watching this song evolve since I first recorded the demo," Rhett adds. "Danielle's voice really took it to another level, and I'm pumped that we got the chance to team up on a new version. It's always a blast getting to create with your friends."

Did You Know? Much of the music on Bradbery's most recent album was inspired by the ups and downs of her own relationship.

Danielle Bradbery's "Goodbye Summer" Lyrics:

He pulled into that parking lot with them out-of-state tags / I fell in love before he unpacked his bags / One look, one smile, one what's your name? / One whatcha doing later, wanna grab a drink?

Chorus:

Hello summer, goodbye to my heart / Blue skies and blue eyes are a hell of a way to start / Letting it go would be the hardest part / Hello summer, goodbye to my heart

Who knew that one drink would turn into five? / Crazy how June burns into July / Trying to keep September from creeping in my head / But I knew what I was getting into the minute that I said

Repeat Chorus

Yeah, he packed his bags, filled his tank with gas / Man, it went by so fast / Too good to last, yeah, just like that

It was goodbye summer, you tore me apart / Blue eyes and blue skies fade into the dark / Letting it go is the hardest part / Hello summer, goodbye to my broken heart / To my broken heart / To my broken heart / To my broken heart

Hello summer / Goodbye summer
