Dylan Scott's wife, Blair, inspired his romantic new single "My Girl," so it was only fitting that we check in with the singer for Valentine's Day. The newlyweds have been together for more than a decade now, and this year they will celebrate their first holiday as a married couple.

Scott opened up to Taste of Country about first meeting his future bride in the seventh grade, and how they make their relationship work while on the road. He also discussed the moment his wife inspired "My Girl," which he wrote when he was in his early 20s.

"My wife and I, we were dating at the time," he tells Taste of Country over the phone from the studio about the inspiration behind his current single. "We were doing long distance. She was living in Louisiana and I was in Tennessee. I was going to visit her, and we were riding around, and an Eminem song came on the radio. The song was 'Lose Yourself,' and she kind of lost herself. She started rapping and dancing in the passenger seat. And I'm driving -- trying to drive. Here I was, this 21-year-old kid with my girlfriend just rapping and dancing."

As soon as he got back to Nashville he told his friend Josh Kerr about the experience, and the two sat down to write the song. Scott recalls it being difficult to start the song, but eventually, they decided to call it "My Girl" and write about all the things that he sees in Blair that nobody else does.

"Everything's really personal about the song. It's mine and my wife's life, basically. It's a real special song," he adds. "It's taken on new meaning now because it's a song that's blowing up for us and changing my life."

Scott first met Blair in middle school when she transferred into his school, but they didn't talk until high school. The summer going into their sophomore year, he hung out with her and a mutual friend and he says, "that was it," and they've been together ever since. He says his wife loves Valentine's Day, so he tries his hardest to make it special for her, whether it's flying her out to a show or simply having dinner and seeing a movie.

"She just wants to spend it with me. There was a time for three or four years where I did not spend Valentine's Day with her because I was living here, she was living in Louisiana, and I was on the road," he recalls. "That was tough. Those were tough Valentine's Days, but we made it through it."

During Scott's senior year of high school, he planned a very romantic Valentine's Day. He says he borrowed his sister's hair salon space after school and convinced his sister to set up a table for a candlelight dinner in the middle of the salon. By the time Scott and his wife arrived, there was Olive Garden food awaiting them at the dimmed salon.

"Then I pulled my guitar out, and I sang George Strait's 'I Cross My Heart,'" he shares.

Scott will be spending time with his wife on Feb. 14 this year and says his ideal Valentine's Day is making his wife happy. He explains that Blair is his best friend, and that's how they make their sometimes long-distance relationship work.

"What I've learned the most is to be patient and enjoy it," he says of marriage. "Marriage is different than dating. It's different living with somebody. Just be patient and talk through things. Keep in mind that [she's] your best friend, and you have to treat it that way."
