1964 – Guitarist Porter Howell is born in Longview, Texas. He helps found Little Texas, a thick-harmonied vocal group that becomes a major act during the mid-1990s behind the hits “God Blessed Texas,” “What Might Have Been” and “Kick A Little”.

2003 – Johnny Cash makes his first public appearance since the funeral for his wife, June Carter. It’s also his last public performance. Along with son John Carter Cash, the Man In Black sings “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Ring Of Fire” in Hiltons, Virginia.

 

2000 – Jo Dee Messina’s “That’s The Way” video debuts on CMT.

 

1997 – Alabama hosts its final June Jam in Fort Payne, Alabama. The lineup includes Heartland, a band that waits another nine years before scoring its first hit single.

 

1983 – Mercury Records signs Kathy Mattea to her first recording contract.

 

1976 – Reba McEntire marries Charlie Battles at the First Baptist Church in Stringtown, Oklahoma. They honeymoon in Texas, where they make time to promote her latest single to radio stations.

 

1972 – Allison Moorer is born in Frankville, Alabama. The younger sister of Shelby Lynne, she earns an Oscar nomination for her song “A Soft Place To Fall,” included in the movie “The Horse Whisperer”.

 

1959 – Kathy Mattea is born in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. Deftly balancing art and commercialism, she nabs a pair of Grammy awards and is twice named the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year.
