Do you know what a Bay Duiker is? Without Googling it?

Lufkin's Ellen Trout Zoo has a new baby Bay Duiker, a kind of antelope, and it's one of only 19 Bay Duikers in North America. Can we see it yet?

We can see it on the Ellen Trout Zoo's Facebook page, but for now the baby Bay Duiker is off limits to the public & being kept out of sight until he gets a little older. He weighed just three pounds when he was born. He's being monitored by zoo staff and veterinarians and kept in seclusion until he's comfortable in his enclosure. The zoo says while we're waiting on the new baby to make its first public appearance, we can see other duikers near the hippoquarium.

Because they're so rare, the zoo says it's working with another AZA accredited zoo and a private holder to manage the small Bay Duiker population. Who knew we had something so rare, right in our backyard!

Wanna head there this weekend? The zoo is at 402 Zoo Circle in Lufkin, just off of north Loop 287. It's only five bucks for adults, and kids 4 and under are free.
