Rather than seeking comfort in the typical vices of country tunes, Eric Church looks for it in the grooves of vinyl that make up his record collection in his new music video for “Record Year.”

The title’s double meaning is clear from the get-go, as Church reflects the theme in clever phrasing like “turned the tables” to describe his situation. Though his significant other is gone, he’s using his newly found alone time to dive into the classics and have a “record year.”

The video features the same young representation of Church, McKinley James -- who starred in the video for "Mr. Misunderstood” as well as the album’s cover art -- as the misfit teen with his own style, finding his own path to survival. Church hands over his records one by one to the young man, who takes them by the armful to the back of his vintage car, piling them in boxes.

Church continues his well-crafted lyrics by noting, “I’ve gotten on a needle to save me,” the dual implications clear, also tipping his hat to classic albums like Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger and John Lee Hooker’s One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. James gradually replaces the weights on a bench press bar with records, filling it up with vinyl from artists like Nelson and Waylon Jennings to create a visual representation of a waveform.

The “Record Year” video also includes an appearance from Church’s signature edition of the Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar, titled Hummingbird Dark.

Church performed “Record Year” at the 2016 ACM Awards April 3, especially poignant with its references to artists like the Eagles, whose member Glenn Frey recently passed, and the late David Bowie. Mr. Misunderstood was released as a surprise to fans just before the CMA Awards last November and earned the No. 2 slots on both the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and the Billboard 200.

The singer-songwriter is slated to perform at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel and Casino April 30 and May 1, as well as headline at WE Fest 2016 in Minnesota this summer.
