Father of the Nashville Sound Born This Day in Country Music – October 21st (Video)

1915 – Record producer Owen Bradley is born in Westmoreland, Tennessee. He establishes the first recording studio on what becomes Music Row, heads Decca, and produces Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, among others, joining the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1974.

 

2012 – Garth Brooks, Connie Smith and session keyboard player Hargus “Pig” Robbins officially join the Country Music Hall of Fame during a medallion ceremony in Nashville.

 

2009 – Brad Paisley performs at New York’s prestigious Madison Square Garden for the first time. Joining him on the bill: Dierks Bentley and Jimmy Wayne.

 

2004 – Toby Keith receives his second quadruple-platinum album, for “Shock’n Y’all”.

 

2001 – A Country Freedom Concert at the Gaylord Entertainment Center rallies Nashvillians after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Appearing: George Strait, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Martina McBride, Lonestar, Hank Williams Jr., Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill and Lee Ann Womack.

 

1999 – The Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces” album reaches 8 million in shipments.

 

1997 – Reba McEntire sings the national anthem at Jacobs Field in Cleveland before game 3 of the World Series. The Florida Marlins beat the Indians, 14-11.

 

1988 – Warner Bros. releases Randy Travis’ “Deeper Than The Holler”.

 

1987 – Exactly six months after its release, Dwight Yoakam’s “Hillbilly Deluxe” is recognized with a gold album.

 

1967 – The Music City News presents its first annual awards at Ernest Tubb’s Record Shop. Merle Haggard wins Favorite Male Artist, and Loretta Lynn wins Favorite Female Artist.
