Florida Georgia Line, ‘Stay’ [Listen]

Here's to the Good Times
Republic Nashville

‘Stay’ is the most important song of Florida Georgia Line‘s young career. The heartbreaker finds the two cocksure men bleeding and knocked down a few steps from the truck bed they confidently stood in for their first three singles. To sustain a lengthy country music career, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard need to prove they’re a well-rounded duo.

Sonically, this mid-tempo cut (it’s not quite a ballad) stays true to the style FGL introduced with ‘Cruise’ and flushed out further with ‘Round Here’ and ‘Get Your Shine On.’ Joey Moi adds party-in-a-box production, with Hubbard playing the one guy having a bad night. Lyrically, this story has real emotional depth, and the two men make a sincere effort to allow it come through.

I’d sell my soul just to see your face / And I’d break my bones just to heal your pain / In these times I need a saving grace / But time is running out and I’m starting to lose my faith,” Florida Georgia Line sing during the first verse.

Kelley’s answers to many of the lyrics evoke memories of a late ’90s boyband, but given today’s country climate, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. As the song builds, he plays a larger role.

The second verse goes: “My heart’s on my sleeve, but it’s turning black (I guess I know what it feels like it to be alone) / Without your touch I’m not gonna last / (I know you know that I need you just to carry on) / It feels like my walls are caving in (You’d always hold me before I left you hanging on) / And I’ll do anything to have you here again.”

Ultimately, the success of this song will depend on the lead and backing vocals. Fans who’ve already dismissed the duo won’t reconsider, but those who enjoy what they bring to the radio may find something new to appreciate.

Why Fans Will Love It: FGL don’t sound too far removed from their partying element on this song about heartbreak. It’s a new way to appreciate the duo.

Key Lyrics: “And if I wrote you a love song and sang it to you every day / Would it ever be enough to make you wanna come back home and stay”

Did You Know?: Do the lyrics of ‘Stay’ sound a little darker than what you’re used to hearing from FGL? That’s because this is a cover of a rock song by Black Stone Cherry. Listen to their version here.
