A wreck involving four vehicles occurred this morning on Highway 59 near Pineywoods Country Club.

A Nacogdoches woman was killed in the accident and others are being treated at area hospitals. 

The Department of Public Safety issued the following report:

 

At approximately 8:15am, there was a four vehicle crash on US-59 near County Road 609.  The crash killed one person from Nacogdoches and injured several other motorists.

According to the initial report by State Troopers, The driver of a 1998 Ford Taurus was traveling southbound on US-59 in the left lane (fast lane).  For an unknown reason, the driver, 52 year old, Debby Jean Austin of Nacogdoches, crossed the center median into the northbound lanes of traffic.  Austin first side-swiped a 2011 Mazda passenger vehicle which was driven by 49 year old, Verna Sowler of Lufkin.  Austin continued southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic striking a 2004 Saturn passenger vehicle which was driven by  28 year old, Jamietra Hennington of Nacogdoches and then striking a 2005 Chevrolet truck driven by 53 year old, Lester Golden of Lufkin.  After striking the Chevrolet truck, Austin’s vehicle was propelled into the center median where it came to rest.

Debby Jean Austin was pronounced dead at 8:30am by Justice of the Peace #4, Perkins.  Lester Golden was taken by ambulance to Memorial hospital in Nacogdoches with unknown injuries.  Jamietra Hennington was also transported by ambulance to Memorial hospital in Nacogdoches with unknown injuries.  Both Golden and Hennington were responsive before being transported to the local hospital.  Verna Sowler was not injured and was able to drive her vehicle from the crash scene.  All occupants were wearing seatbelts.
