Haim’s Shania Twain Cover Is Haunting and Delightful [Watch]

You’ve never heard Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much” like this.

Pop-rock group Haim took the country-pop mega hit and turned it into a smooth, haunting (yet still fun) cover during a recent appearance on the Australian radio show Triple J for their Like a Version series … and it’s amazing.

The band, made up of three sisters, have made a name for themselves with their ’80s-inspired sound — not to mention their bona fide friendship with one Taylor Swift — and their skillful musicality is evident in how they approach this tune. “That Don’t Impress Me Much” already has an interesting structure, shifting from a minor key to its major key for parts of the tune, then returning to the original.

Haim take on the trademark bass line accompanied by a synth pad and electronic drums, giving it a more modern sound than the ’90s style from which it originates, but keeping its integrity intact. The ladies’ vocals are flawless as lead singer Danielle Haim brings the verses and Este Haim takes the chorus (as well as the sassy monologues). The third sister, Alana, takes on the percussion to create a unique version any fans of either Twain or Haim should check out immediately.

The girl group actually gush about Twain at the beginning of the video and how big of fans they are, which is something they have in common with Swift. Back in 2010, when the young singer-songwriter was first beginning in country music, Swift dubbed Twain her inspiration.

“I remember when I was a little kid, I used to see Shania Twain and I just remember thinking if I ever got a chance, by some crazy streak of luck, to be on a stage, I’d want to do as much as I could to say thank you,” Swift said.

Twain actually returns the admiration. The singer, even when Swift took a stylistic journey into pop music, said she loves what the “Blank Space” singer is doing. “[Taylor]’s a singer-songwriter-performer, she does it all … the world is her oyster” said Twain in 2014. “She’s young and she needs to just do whatever she’s having fun at and I think everybody’s loving it.”

Twain has been in the news a lot lately — a fact her fans are excited about — as she’s due to release a new album called Now in September.
