Every once in a while, I receive a press release from a branch of our armed services highlighting someone from the local area.  A few weeks ago, Britton Smallwood was featured.

In the picture above Seaman Smallwood reviews an inventory list of chain hoists aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Stennis is currently undergoing an operational training period in preparation for future deployments.

Britton Smallwood and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Nacogdoches.  I had the chance to have a phone conversation with Smallwood and learned some interesting facts about him.  He is originally from the Dallas area, but then moved to Canton.  What brought him to the Oldest Town in Texas?  Football.  Smallwood was recruited to play defensive tackle at Stephen F Austin State University, but an injury cut his college career short.

Currently, Smallwood is stationed at a naval base in the state of Washington.  As mentioned in the photograph, he is part of a crew bringing the USS John C. Stennis up to grade for upcoming deployments.  Smallwood admits that the toughest part of his service is being so far away from the ones that he loves.  He adds that he enjoys what he does and is proud to serve his country, but he does look forward to the day that he is able to permanently settle down at his home in Nacogdoches.

Thank you Seaman Britton Smallwood for everything that you do.  East Texas is proud of you.
