Congratulations are in order for Lufkin High School teacher, Kym Guzman, winner of the Gilbert I. Low Excellence in Education Award.  This award recognizes outstanding contributions of East Texas teachers and the recipient receives a $10,000 award.   

In order to qualify for the Gilbert I. Low Excellence in Education Award candidates must have completed five years teaching experience, be a full-time classroom teacher at a public or non-public school in Angelina, Sabine, or San Augustine County, whose responsibility is the direct instruction of students, and the candidates must have completed the Foundations' extensive application packet by the stated deadline.

The press release from Lufkin ISD goes on to state that Gilbert I. Low Excellence in Education candidates should exemplify the highest standards and practices of the teaching profession. These qualities include but are not limited to:

  • Dedication, knowledge, and skill
  • The expertise to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities
  • A demonstrated distinguished classroom practice
  • Professionalism and collegiality
  • High standards for themselves and their students
