A Lufkin man in a motorized wheelchair died due to injuries suffered in an auto/pedestrian accident that occurred Thursday morning on Atkinson Drive.  Details from a release from the Lufkin Police Department follow:

Lufkin Police worked a traffic fatality Thursday morning after a Lufkin man in a motorized wheelchair was hit by a dump truck in front of the Texas Forestry Museum on Atkinson Drive.

James Rudolph Roy Jr., 70, died at CHI St. Luke’s Memorial-Lufkin from unknown injuries following the accident that happened around 8:30 a.m. An autopsy has been ordered.  Roy was headed back to his Atkinson Drive home after shopping at a nearby Dollar General store when a truck driven by Ronnie Eugene Grogan, 64, of Lufkin, pulled out from a private forest service drive and hit the man.

“Mr. Roy was headed east on the shoulder as required by law,” officer Toby Stanaland said.

The truck was part of a crew working at the forest service. Roy was seen talking to Lufkin Fire paramedics as they worked to get him in an ambulance.  A Dollar General employee who came to check on Roy called him a “sweet little man” who frequented the store.

“He came down this morning to let us know we wouldn’t see him for a few days so we wouldn’t worry about him,” she said.

Grogan was ticketed for failure to yield from a private drive.
The accident remains under investigation by Lufkin Police Department.
