According to a press release, around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8th, Lufkin Police received information that a man known to have felony warrants who had previously fled from DPS was at a home on Saint Andrews Circle in the Crown Colony subdivision.

When officers arrived, they found the man in question – 22-year-old Trace Bentley – attempting to leave the home in a blue Cadillac. Officers ordered him to stop, but he refused and drove recklessly down the driveway, hitting several trees. He continued up a neighboring driveway where he crashed into a fence. With his car disabled, Bentley fled on foot into a wooded area behind the subdivision.

Officers gave chase down a high line, but they lost sight of him. As officers continued their search, they came across a box-style deer stand. Upon searching it, they found that Bentley had locked himself inside with a gun.

Because Bentley was armed, the Special Response Team was called. The team set up a command post off FM 58 at a property that backs up to the area where Bentley was hiding.

Though negotiators attempted to talk Bentley out of the deer stand for several hours, he would not come out. Bentley was taken into custody around 1:40 a.m. after the Special Response Team fired tear gas into the stand.

Bentley had warrants for possession of a dangerous drug, resisting arrest and evading arrest. Additional charges are pending.
