The Lufkin Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Gobblers Knob Road Friday morning.

According to a Lufkin PD press release, a man died at CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Lufkin, while a woman remained in critical condition at the same facility.

A witness said the vehicle – a 2002 Acura – was traveling erratically at a high rate of speed inbound toward Southwood before it lost control and struck a tree and power pole. The accident was called in at 11:15 a.m. by a woman leaving a nearby home.

A medical helicopter landed at the scene as Lufkin Fire paramedics worked to free the man from the vehicle. After they freed him, he was too critical to fly. He later died at the hospital.  The crash remains under investigation by Lufkin Police Department and names of those involved in the crash have not been released.
