**Taken from an official Lufkin Police Dept press release**

Lufkin Police Department Detectives, with cooperation from the
United States Postal Inspection Service, obtained a warrant for the arrest of Jaylon Carroll
Wortham for the offense of Assault Causing Bodily Injury Against a
Government Contractor/Employee, a Third Degree Felony.

The LPD Detectives sought the warrant following a combined LPD/USPIS investigation into a November 22 assault incident in which Mr. Wortham intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly caused bodily injury to Lindsey Guthery, a Mail Carrier employed by the United Stated Postal Service.

On November 22, LPD officers responded to 1105 Sayers Street in Lufkin following a report that USPS Mail Carrier Lindsey Guthery had been shot. Ms. Guthery, who was wearing a USPS uniform and delivering mail on foot at the time, stated to the officers that as she crossed in front of the residence located at 1105 Sayers Street she heard a shot and felt a stinging sensation at the back of her left thigh. She stated that she fell to her knees and wiped blood from the back of her thigh. Ms. Guthery stated that she believed she was shot intentionally by someone in a group of people near the front porch of 1105 Sayers
Street.

The officers saw the bleeding wound, approximately one-quarter-inch in diameter, to Ms. Guthery's leg. From the appearance of the injury and the description of the shot, the officers determined that an air rifle shooting a BB or pellet was the likely weapon used to shoot Ms. Guthery. An x-ray revealed that the projectile was lodged between muscles and next to the bone of Ms. Guthery’s leg, in the area above and behind her knee.

The detectives interviewed persons at 1105 Sayers Street and identified seventeen-year-old Jaylon Carroll Wortham as one of the persons in front of the residence at the time of the incident. Through interviewing Mr. Wortham, the detectives learned that Wortham had discharged an air rifle in the direction of Ms. Guthery. Mr. Wortham denied intentionally firing the projectile at Ms. Guthery; he stated that he was shooting at a bird or a squirrel, he did not know which, and that he did not see Ms. Guthery nor know that he had shot her.

At noon today (11/25), Jaylon Carroll Wortham surrendered to LPD Detectives at Angelina County Jail and was booked for the third Degree Felony Assault warrant.
