Luke Bryan Says Brother’s Death Motivated Him to Chase His Dreams

Luke Bryan has suffered what seems like more than his share of tragedy, but in a new interview, the country superstar says it has made him appreciate the importance of chasing his dreams.

Bryan was 19 years old and preparing to move to Nashville and pursue a career in music when his brother Chris, who was 26, was killed in a car accident in 1996. In an interview slated to air Sunday (April 2) on Sunday Today With Willie Geist, Bryan opens up about the impact of his brother’s death.

“It just totally rocked our family’s world, rocked my world,” the country superstar and ACM Awards co-host says. “It makes you appreciate chasing dreams, you know. You’re like, “Hey, you get one go-round at this thing called life and it’s very fragile, so you better go after your dreams.'”

40 Reasons to Love Luke Bryan

Bryan put his dreams on hold at that time to stay and support his mom and work in the family business, but moved to Nashville in 2001 at the urging of his father. Tragedy struck again in 2007 when his sister, Kelly, died suddenly at the age of 39. The cause was never determined. In 2014 Kelly’s husband also died, and Bryan and his wife took their nephew to raise.

Despite his family tragedies, Bryan maintains a buoyant sense of optimism that has helped him build a career as one of the biggest stars in contemporary country music. He’s set to co-host the ACM Awards with his good friend Dierks Bentley on Sunday evening. The awards are set to air live from Las Vegas at 8PM ET on CBS.
