Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist and original member Gary Rossington has undergone heart surgery, forcing the group to cancel several weeks of tour dates.

The 64-year-old guitarist started having chest pains earlier in the week, which caused the iconic Southern rock group to cancel a planned performance. Now the group has announced two more weeks of canceled dates as Rossington recuperates.

“The Lynyrd Skynyrd band is canceling or rescheduling the next 2 weeks of touring, while Gary Rossington recovers at home from heart surgery to repair blockage in his arteries,” the group announced via Facebook. “Currently, the band hopes to resume touring on August 4 in Woodlands, TX. The band has rescheduled Boston, MA at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion to September 23 and moved Big Flats, NY at Tag’s Summer Sound Stage to the following day, September 24. We are continuing to work on other potential re-scheduling, as well. Please stay tuned to the Lynyrd Skynyrd website and social media pages for updates.”

Rossington is the only original member remaining in the current lineup of Skynyrd, which still tours extensively every year. This year's dates have seen the group performing with fellow '70s superstar Peter Frampton.

The guitarist has a long history of heart problems. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, he underwent a quintuple bypass in 2003, and he also suffered a heart attack in October of 2015 that forced Skynyrd to remove all remaining 2015 concerts from their schedule. Rossington underwent surgery after that heart attack to add or repair stents that were inserted in 2003.
