Paul McCartney Teases His ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Character

It would seem that there are two stages every iconic musician must go through in the twilight of their careers: induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a guest spot in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Such was the case with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who  —  in a nod to Johnny Depp’s appropriation of elements of his persona  — appeared in two films as the father of Jack Sparrow. And now the franchise has pulled in another iconic musician, with Beatles legend Paul McCartney sharing his gruff sea captain via social media.

Earlier today, McCartney took to Twitter to share a character poster of his unnamed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales pirate. And while he certainly looks like all the other characters in the franchise, yep, there’s McCartney’s face peeking out from behind the mangy beard. Take a look for yourself:

You don’t cast someone like Paul McCartney if you’re not going to take a few light-hearted digs at his fame, so expect to hear a few jokes about his pirate’s decision to go ‘solo’ or the success of his ventures after he left his more-famous crew behind. Otherwise, this seems like just another excuse for Johnny Depp to hang out with musicians he admires. Unless McCartney has a sea chanty on the Dead Men Tell No Tales soundtrack, of course. Ooh, there’s a bit of cross-promotion I could get behind.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film:

The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea  —  notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

The latest film will feature Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Keira KnightleyOrlando Bloom, and franchise newcomers Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, and Brenton Thwaites. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will sail into theaters on May 26, 2017.
