Pearl Harbor – A Day Which Will Live In ‘World History’?
As we mark the remembrance of this, the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, there are images that stay with us, such as the vision of the USS Arizona engulfed in flames.
There are words as well, such as ‘A day that will live in infamy’.
However, how close were we to never hearing those words?
In fact, the first draft of the speech that President Roosevelt was to deliver to Congress on the evening of December 7th contained the sentence, “…a day that will live in world history.”
However, FDR made changes to that line as well as many other edits to the rough draft, and in doing so, produced one of the most powerful Presidential messages in history.
Take a look at the first draft and the changes below…and never forget the 2400+ men and women who perished at Pearl Harbor.
