Closures and detours are planned for Wednesday and Thursday for portions of Highways 59 and 69 that will affect travel in Angelina and San Jacinto counties.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the US 59/Loop 287 Southbound Direct Connector at South First Street in Lufkin will be closed Wednesday afternoon from 1 pm to 5 pm for follow-up inspections to the bridge. Traffic will be detoured to the South First Street exit ramp for motorists needing to access US 59 South/South First Street.

A traffic switch is also planned for Wednesday on US 69 South beginning at FM 844 between Zavalla and Huntington in Angelina County. Traffic will be moved to new pavement on the west side of US 69 South in order for construction to begin on the east side of the roadway as this project to widen US 69 South from two to four lanes continues. Traffic will be returned to its normal configuration near Huntington Intermediate School, south of Huntington.

On Thursday, traffic will be confined to one lane on US 59 southbound at Big Creek Bridge near Shepherd in San Jacinto County. The bridge is scheduled for inspection and that will cause traffic to be confined to a single lane from 9 am to 1 pm. Traffic control and flaggers will be in place at the bridge.

As this work is done, motorists are urged to use caution and expect delays during peak travel hours. Reduce speed in the area and follow all traffic control. It is illegal to drive through or around barricades or cones. Obey flaggers and respect the work zone. Traffic fines double when workers are in place.
