Razor Blade Embedded in Slide on East Texas Playground

I grew up in a town of about 7,000, and my parents didn’t think twice about me going out to ride my bicycle for several hours at a time.  I’m saddened to think that my kids, as well as many of my friend’s kids never got to realize that open freedom…it’s just too dangerous.

But, I’ve taken my kids to playgrounds in the East Texas area numerous times.  I have no problem watching them swing, hang on a jungle gym, or go down a slide.  I mean, as long as a parent is watching, that all still seems safe…right?  You might want to think again.

According to a release from the City of Huntsville, authorities have confirmed that a razor blade was found melted into a slide at a city park playground in Huntsville. Apparently, someone used a heating device to melt a small portion of a plastic slide and then inserted the blade, leaving it to injure any children sliding down.

Thankfully, I haven’t heard of any kids getting injured as a result, but Huntsville Police are making it a top priority to catch the person(s) responsible not only for this incident, but also the occurrence of the damage of equipment at a separate city park playground (pictured above). I don’t know about you, but the culprit(s) better hope that they are nabbed by the police and not caught by a group of angry parents.

In addition to this,  Huntsville Police (HPD) are also investigating the discovery of a utility knife blade attached to a local store shopping cart. Local retailers are being asked to check carts regularly. HPD is making efforts to contact as many such businesses as possible.

The blade was found following a minor injury to a customer at the Ravenwood Village shopping center. HPD is working with the store’s staff to try to find a suspect. At this time, no other tampered carts have been located and carts are being monitored to prevent future occurrences.

HPD is requesting the public’s help in reporting any similar suspicious behavior. Along with the razor blade found in a local playground slide, the public is asked to be vigilant. HPD has been visiting local childcare centers to check their playground equipment as well.
