Hurricanes may not be the only thing we should be concerned about in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to a report in the publication – ‘Washington Free Beacon’ – a Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected for several weeks in June and July of this  year in the Gulf of Mexico.  The WFB goes on to report that this happened at the same time that Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California.

Unnamed U.S. officials were cited by the publication about this alleged activity.

However, the credibility of the story has opened quite a few eyes in Washington.  Even Senator John Cornyn from Texas has gone on record to issue the following statement:

It’s a confounding situation arising from a lack of leadership in our dealings with Moscow. While the president is touting our supposed ‘reset’ in relations with Russia, Vladimir Putin is actively working against American interests, whether it’s in Syria or here in our own backyard.

The officials who are familiar with reports of the submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico said the vessel was a nuclear-powered Akula-class attack submarine, one of Russia’s quietest submarines.

The U.S. Navy has declined to comment, while an official with the U.S. Department of Defense has labeled the story as untrue.

There was no indication in the story as to exactly where in the Gulf of Mexico the alleged breech took place.
