Steve Wariner’s Father Dies

Steve Wariner‘s father has died at the age of 88.

The country star posted to Instagram to share the news on Monday (July 10), writing, “It is with great sadness I bring you the news of my Fathers passing. Roy Monroe Wariner died peacefully Friday night, July 7th, in Jamestown, Kentucky. Thank you all so very much for your prayers, kindness and condolences. It is very much appreciated. He was certainly my hero and inspiration and will forever be missed.”

According to his obituary, Roy Wariner was born on Aug. 21, 1928 in Champaign, Ill., to the late Roe and Nellie Lawless Wariner. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a music teacher, as well as an active church member. He died at the Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown.

Steve Wariner actually began his musical career by playing in his father’s band before he went on to a career as one of country music’s most respected singers, songwriters, guitarists and producers. He scored one of his biggest hits with “Holes in the Floor of Heaven,” a song in which the narrator proposes that there are holes in the floor of Heaven through which departed loved ones continue to watch over us. The song won Song of the Year in 1998 from both the Country Music Association CMA and the Academy of Country Music.

Wariner tweeted a picture of himself with his dad on Father’s Day in June, writing, “Happy Father’s Day to all you fathers … and to my special Dad! Thanks for all your inspiration, love and the gift of music. #FathersDay.”

Roy Wariner was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene Glover Wariner; a son, Larry Wariner; a grandson, Matthew Joseph Wariner and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by five children, 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his brother Lowell Wariner of Noblesville, Ind.

Funeral services for Roy Wariner are set to take place Tuesday (July 11) at 2PM at the Bernard Funeral Home Chapel in Russell Springs, Ky., followed by interment in the Jamestown Cemetery with full military honors by the Russell County Honor Guard. Visitation is scheduled from 10AM-2 PM on Tuesday.
