We’re nearing the end of 2017 and you may think you’ve already seen or heard about every major awards contender for Oscar season; you haven’t. There’s still a Steven Spielberg movie on the horizon, mind you, one starring none other than Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. And the trio might just swoop up all the nominations in sight.

The first trailer for The Post, Spielberg’s Pentagon Papers political drama, arrived this morning. In a refreshing change-up from the typical male-led political biopic, The Post centers on Streep’s Katherine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper who oversaw The Washington Post‘s exposure of the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. Streep’s as fierce as ever as Graham in the first footage, responding to a male colleague’s comment about her gender with an amused smile, and later firmly telling another man, “I’m asking your advice, not your permission.” *fire emojis*  Hanks plays Post editor Ben Bradlee, who consults with Graham over the paper’s decision to publish the damning documents about the U.S. government’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

Here’s the full synopsis:

Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in The Post, a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post’s Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers - and their very freedom - to help bring long-buried truths to light.

That trailer hardly does the film’s fantastic ensemble justice. You’ll spot Bob Odenkirk, Bruce Greenwood, Sarah Paulson, Bradley Whitford, and Tracy Letts, but wait there’s moreThe Post also stars Carrie Coon, Alison Brie, Jesse Plemmons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Zach Woods, David Cross, and Matthew Rhys. The Spielberg film is one of the few major December releases that’s bound to shake up the awards race – I mean, with Spielberg and that cast – how can it not. It might just be this year’s Spotlight. The Post hits limited theaters December 22, followed by a wide release on January 12.
