The music world was shaken by the passing of Ralph Stanley on June 23. The music legend died at the age of 89 after complications from cancer. At Stanley's funeral earlier this week, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs honored the late icon with a poignant performance of "Go Rest High on That Mountain."

Before the singers began the song, both Loveless and Gill spoke highly of their mentor.

"He was the one that taught me how to sing," Loveless said. "I continue to try my best to touch people’s lives as Ralph did with his voice."

Meanwhile, Gill remarked that he would not have been able to write "Go Rest High on That Mountain" after his brother's death if it was not for Stanley's music.

"It means the world to me that in some small way I mattered to Ralph. As a 16-year-old boy I was really taken with bluegrass," Gill said before praising Stanley's voice as being the most mournful and soulful sound he knew. "It reached deep inside of me more than any other voice I ever heard."

"If it had not been for the music of the Stanley Brothers, especially Ralph's voice, I wouldn't have known how to write this song, and I wouldn't have known how to sing this song had it not been for Ralph Stanley," he concluded.

The three artists then performed the heartfelt track during a public ceremony that took place on Tuesday (June 28) in Virginia. Watch above for the tribute in its entirety.
