It’s the beginning of a holiday weekend, YAY! And the beginning of people in your way on the road and aggressive drivers ticking you off. Who will present the biggest problem on the road today? It’s those darn red light runners.

We’ve probably all had the experience of sitting at a red light that turns green, signaling our chance to go, and all of a sudden a car zooms through from the other direction. Near miss! Red light runners cause accidents all the time, and it turns out today is one of their favorite days to do it.

And what are the most dangerous intersections in Lufkin?

The National Coalition for Safer Roads says motorists fly through red lights at a 27 percent higher pace on holiday weekends. And Fridays are when most violations happen. Three out of ten red lights are blown between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Fridays.

Among the most dangerous intersections in Lufkin from a general consensus around the office: Highway 59 (Loop) and College Drive. In fact, just about anywhere along Highway 59 can be trouble. Or maybe South 1st St. at Denman? Any others?

The moral of the story, just watch for crazy drivers. Because we know it’s everyone else that is running the red lights and driving errantly. We know it’s not you.

Today is a fun day with the start of a long holiday weekend, but that can be quickly ruined if you get in a fender bender on the way home from work, or as you’re leaving town. Oh, and buckle up because the Click it or Ticket seat belt campaign is still going and that’s another quick way to get fined.

Have a great weekend!
