If you're looking for a career change, we strongly urge you to avoid this one.

CareerCast has come out with its annual list of the worst jobs in America for 2016 (you can find the best ones here) and topping (or, more appropriately, bottoming out) the rankings is newspaper reporter. Yes, that career which calls to mind images of middle-aged guys gnawing on chewed-up cigars while wearing fedoras with "Press" cards in them as they run to the pay phone to call in their stories after the shocking "guilty" verdict has been handed down, is now less respectable than garbage man and guy who sprays poison to kill insects.

Welcome to 2016, where you should seriously think about making a run at one these high-paying jobs.

How did Career Cast create its rankings?

The Jobs Rated report’s methodology analyzes each job’s environment (emotional, physical and hours worked), income (growth potential and salary), outlook (employment growth, income growth potential and unemployment), and 11 stress factors to determine which professions are among the least desirable."

Thanks to the decline in print media, newspaper reporter, which may be an occupation you think about avoiding like the plague, took it on the chin in the study. With an annual median salary of $37,200, you'd be hard-pressed to get into the business and expect to be able to retire at 65, if you're lucky enough to even still be employed by whatever Daily Bugle hired you in the first place. It's also part of a frightening trend in media as a whole -- three of the five worst jobs are in the field.
