Chase Rice Takes on ‘This Cowboy’s Hat’ With Chris LeDoux’s Son Ned [Watch]
Chase Rice created his own rendition of Chris LeDoux's song "This Cowboy's Hat" alongside the rodeo champion's son, singer-songwriter Ned LeDoux. The song's accompanying music video has a retro appeal, appropriate for the old-school cover.
"That was my childhood … Garth Brooks and Chris LeDoux. And for me to be able to record that song with his son and with one of the guys from [his band] Western Underground playing on the song … that’s insane," Rice shares with Cowboys & Indians. "If I was going to do it, I wasn't going to screw it up. We had to do it right and I think we nailed it."
Rice's "This Cowboy's Hat" video was directed by Cody Cannon and features clips of Rice and Ned LeDoux recording the song, as well as snippets of footage from Colorado's Greeley Stampede, where they performed the song together live for the first — and, thus far, only — time. The video has a VHS-like quality to it, almost as though you're watching a home movie.
The music video ends with footage of Chris LeDoux and Rice's own father, Dan Rice, and the quote "The world needs more cowboys."
"Ned and I got this show together … so we kind of wanted to give a little tip of the hat to his dad and how he did it originally, with a live music video … We actually added in some of the original video as well," Rice explains. "So it's just got a lot of old school with some of Chris actually in the video, and then it's got Ned and I playing together in Colorado, which was, you know, primetime cowboy country."
Rice, who recently notched a No. 1 song with his single "Eyes on You," will hit the road in August for his AM/PM Tour. Cale Dodds, Chris DeStefano, Devin Dawson and Jon Nite will be his special guests.
