The following press release is from the Lufkin Police Department:
The Lufkin Police Department has received multiple reports of criminal mischief over the past few days in which the suspect appeared to have used a slingshot to break out glass doors and windows of local businesses.
Officers were able to determine a possible suspect vehicle description of some of the criminal mischief reports through the use of video surveillance recordings. At approximately 3:50am on January 14, a patrol officer located a vehicle matching the description in a local parking lot. The officer observed a sling shot in the vehicle and made contact with the driver who had exited the automobile. The driver who was identified as Douglas Williams, 39, of Diboll, gave officers consent to search the vehicle.
During the search officers located multiple ball bearings similar to the ones that had been used in the prior criminal mischief reports as well as a second sling shot. Officers also discovered a handgun, approximately 137.5 grams of methamphetamine, 4.2 ounces of marijuana, and other items of drug paraphernalia in the vehicle and on Williams’ person. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana. Warrants for Criminal Mischief are being sought at this time.
