19 East Texas Teams Are State Ranked in High School Basketball
Quite a few high school basketball teams from Deep East Texas are off to a great start this season. As a result, many of those teams are getting recognized in various statewide rankings.
TABC and MaxPreps
On Monday, December 11, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches as well as MaxPreps released their weekly rankings of high school boys' and girls' basketball teams.
The TABC rankings rely on votes and input from basketball coaches around the state. MaxPreps considers teams' records, strength of schedule, and other inputs to feed their algorithms. Consequently, the TABC and MaxPreps polls have some notable differences in their top 25 for each of the conferences.
Class 4A Boys
There is quite a disparity when it comes to the Hudson basketball team. The Hornets are out to a fantastic start with a 14-2 record. That has earned them the #9 ranking in the state according to MaxPreps, while the TABC poll doesn't even have Hudson ranked in the top 25.
I've seen these guys play and given their resume and results, the Hornets definitely should be included as one of the better teams in Class 4A.
Class 3A Boys & Girls
The Crockett Bulldogs with a record of 11-3 are ranked 20th in the TABC poll, and number 11 in the MaxPreps poll. Meanwhile, the Diboll Lumberjacks are ranked 20th in the MaxPreps poll. Thanks to a deep run in the football playoffs, Diboll has only played four games so far, and they have won all four.
The Pineywoods Community Academy girls' basketball team is off to one of their best starts in school history. The Timberwolves boast a record of 12-2. That's good for #16 in the TABC and #9 in Max Preps.
Huntington (from the same district as PCA) is ranked 22nd in TABC and 20th in MaxPreps. The Devilettes have a record of 14-4.
