‘Lady Bird’ Wins Best Motion Picture Comedy at the 2018 Golden Globes
With 2018’s fantastic assortment of Golden Globes contenders, it was more difficult than ever to pinpoint who might take home the gold. This year’s nominees for Best Motion Picture Comedy include critically-acclaimed faves Lady Bird and Get Out, alongside less-likely underdogs I, Tonya, The Disaster Artist, and The Greatest Showman. Given how unpredictable the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voters often are, the statuette could’ve gone to any of them — but tonight, it was Lady Bird that took home the gold.
Loosely inspired by her own coming-of-age, Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut is a tender, hilarious and occasionally searing portrait of a teen desperately yearning to leave her small town Sacramento life behind and pursue her East Coast dreams. Starring Saoirse Ronan in the title role, Lady Bird also features an indelible performance from Laurie Metcalf as her beleaguered, hardworking mother. Co-starring Tracy Letts, Timothée Chalamet and Lucas Hedges, Lady Bird was also nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy, which Ronan won for, Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (Metcalf) and Best Screenplay (Gerwig).
With this key Golden Globe win under its belt, Lady Bird’s shot at the Oscars may have just become a little more certain. See the full list of 2018 Golden Globe winners here.
