LOOK: Texans Favorite Handgun Calibers Are Changing & Here’s Why!
For decades, the .45 ACP and .38 Special calibers have been staples among the top three most popular handgun rounds in Texas. But with the rise in women signing up for concealed carry classes—especially since the onset of COVID-19—these preferences are beginning to shift. As more women arm themselves, they are increasingly choosing calibers that suit their needs and preferences.
Having a wife and five grown daughters has given me a unique insight into these trends. I've noticed that women tend to prefer handguns with less recoil, opting for models that don't "kick" as hard. This trend is making waves across the Lone Star State.
So, is it surprising that the .45 ACP and .38 Special have both been knocked out of the top three? Not really. The 9mm has firmly secured the top spot, which is no shock considering it has been a favorite for the last two decades. However, what caught my attention was the caliber sitting at #2.
You might expect the .380 caliber to take second place, given the 9mm's dominance. But surprisingly, the .22 Long Rifle (LR) has claimed this position. The petite .22 LR has become a favorite among Texans, especially women with smaller hands who prefer a caliber that offers more control and less recoil. The affordability and availability of the .22 LR only add to its appeal.
It’s clear that the pandemic has fueled a surge in handgun sales across Texas, with women leading the charge. As we approach the upcoming "Texas Gun & Knife Show" at the Abilene Convention Center, it's no wonder that smaller-caliber handguns will be a hot commodity.
At the show, you’ll not only find an array of these popular firearms but also beautiful purses designed for concealed carry, along with matching jewelry and other accessories like holsters. According to Backfire.com, “The shooting public has gravitated toward a handful of more popular handgun calibers. Two of the most popular are the .22 LR and the 9mm, offering significant benefits such as a greater variety of guns chambered for these calibers and the economy of ammo and firearms.”
Don’t miss the Texas Gun & Knife Show this Saturday and Sunday, August 17 & 18. Admission is $10 per person per day (kids 12 and under enter free). Remember to bring your firearms unloaded and check them in at the front desk, where a Taylor County Sheriff's deputy will assist you.
