Black Ice Leads To 7 Accidents In Lufkin, Texas

• Black Ice causes 7 accidents since 6 AM in Lufkin, Texas.
• Multiple accidents in the 4100 block of North Medford Drive.
• Black Ice is impossible to see and Lufkin Police are asking everyone to stay home if possible.

Ice coated several overpasses overnight and the Lufkin Police Department has already worked seven accidents due to the icy conditions. One minor accident involved a vehicle sliding into an AWP traffic control truck. No injuries were reported.

Lufkin Police Department has issued a Black Ice Warning, and with temperatures not getting above freezing today, they have advised everyone to stay at home if possible.

If you must go out, take precautions when you drive. Slow down and take your time. Don't get in a hurry to be on time anywhere.

Black Ice Is Impossible To See On Lufkin Roadways 

The seven accidents have been reported in the following areas:

- Multiple accidents in the 4100 block of North Medford Drive near the flyover for 59N to Nacogdoches

- 4200 block of North Medford Drive on the U.S. 59N flyover

- South John Redditt Drive near Elite Collision - rollover accident

- 2300 block of Atkinson Drive near the former Dairy Queen location

The Angelina Street bridge over Frank Avenue is completely iced over according to reports from the Lufkin Police Department. It looked completely passable until further inspection.

LPD night shift officers reported icy and dangerous roads on their drives home after their shift at 6 AM.

Update From Lufkin Police Department 5 PM 01.15.24

WEATHER-RELATED CLOSING: Lufkin City Hall and additional city offices open to the public will be closed tomorrow due to the continued icy road threat. 

As a result, tomorrow’s regularly scheduled city council meeting with be postponed until 5 p.m. Wednesday.  

Ellen Trout Zoo is also closed to the public tomorrow due to unsafe sidewalk conditions. Our animals are safe and warm. 

Trash pickup will also be delayed until Wednesday and run as follows:

Monday areas on Wednesday

Tuesday areas on Thursday

Wednesday areas on Friday

We will be running an extra truck those days so make sure carts are out by 7 a.m.

The Police Department is continuing to work on numerous weather-related crashes and road conditions are only getting worse as temperatures continue to fall. As of 5 p.m. today, LPD had worked nearly TWENTY accidents and the day is far from over. 

We hope everyone stays safe and warm, and postpones any unnecessary trips or errands until safer road conditions return. If you must get out, SLOW DOWN and allow additional travel time to arrive safely at your destination.
