Unloaded Gun Discovered In Lufkin High Restroom Trash Can
Lufkin High School was temporarily "Locked Down" on September 8th after a firearm was discovered on campus. While details are limited, Lufkin ISD did issue a statement on their Facebook page about the incident.
According to the statement, the high school was moved to "secure" status after reports surfaced of a weapon possibly being located on campus. Following a quick investigation, an unloaded gun was found in a trash can in one of the schools restrooms.
The statement goes on to say that the school has returned to normal operations. You can read the full statement from Lufkin ISD below.
According to Texas.gov, bringing a firearm on to a school campus (with few exceptions) is a very serious offense. A student who brings a weapon will be expelled for at least one year - as required by the federal "Gun-Free Zone Act".
Unfortunately, in today's world, there's been a rise in violence at K-12 schools. According to an article from CNN published on August 27th 2025, there have already been 44 school shootings in the United States that have left 18 people dead and at least 74 others wounded or injured.
So, while this story seems to have a positive ending, there is a growing trend in violence and online threats at schools. Authorities tell parents to talk to their kids about what they post online and to teach them that if they see something wrong to tell a teacher or other school official.
