Before the kids head back to school (which is coming up quickly), Lufkin's Kurth Memorial Library will be kicking off August with a fun event for the whole family.

Friday, August 1, the library will be hosting an open house, chemistry show, and book sale.

The Chemistry Road Show

The open house starts with a bang as the Chemistry Road Show from Texas A&M demonstrates the excitement and wonder of chemical reactions at 11 a.m.

Experiments include colorful chemical reactions and expanding polymers, and the demonstrator will explain how the chemical reactions happen.

"We always look forward to hosting the Chemistry Road Show," Library Manager Julie Massey said. "It's a patron favorite, and the show demonstrates the fun and excitement of learning."

Open House

The open house will feature displays of materials for students who learn at home and those who attend public and private institutions. The library has many hands-on learning resources, including science kits, math kits, money kits and reading games.

One science kit, Beaker Creatures Liquid Reactor Super Lab, allows young scientists to create a reaction in a real-world science experiment. An electronic dual language kit helps English and Spanish learners listen, see, and say 512 words.

In addition to the displays, tours of the facility will be available. Visitors can discover how to get a library card, where to reserve a computer and how to locate different types of materials. They will also see study rooms that are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pop-up Book Sale

Friends of the library will have a pop-up book sale from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Featured books will include children's books, science fiction books, mystery books and trade paperbacks.

Children's books will be four for a dollar, with other books at a dollar each.
