Lufkin PD Identify Man Critically Injured by New Year’s Gunfire
Lufkin Police has now released the name of the person who was struck by a stray bullet at a New Year's Eve gathering. Danny McKenna, 67, of Nacogdoches continues to be treated at a Tyler-area hospital.
According to authorities, McKenna is in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday morning. He is continuing to recover from the incident that occurred just after midnight yesterday (Monday).
McKenna was struck by a stray bullet from a nearby home while attending a family member’s New Year’s Eve party in the 2200 block of North Raguet Street, near Morris Frank Park in Lufkin.
McKenna went by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later transferred to Tyler for a higher level of care.
It is believed that the bullet came from gunfire celebrating the new year. No details have been released about possible arrests. Detectives are continuing the investigation into what occurred.
Every year, as New Year's and the 4th of July approaches, police departments across the country issue warnings about firing guns in the air to celebrate the holiday. The message of 'what goes up, must come down' is repeated over and over.
Seven years ago, a Texas lawmaker was injured when a stray bullet struck his head on New Year's Eve. Texas Representative Armando Martinez bears a scar from the bullet that struck his head.
Police officials also drive home the message that firing into the ground is not good either, as dangerous ricochets can occur.
As far as celebrations go, just be careful with the fireworks and leave the guns locked up.
