Motorists who travel Highway 259 through Central Heights or Highway 69 through Central need to be aware of some changes that will take effect in less than two weeks.

Over the past month or two, you may have noticed that work crews have been erecting new traffic signals in those areas. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), work has been completed and those newly constructed traffic signals in Angelina and Nacogdoches counties are now scheduled for activation.

In Angelina County, the new traffic signal will be activated on Wednesday, October 18  on US Highway 69 North at Chimney Rock.

“These two locations have been under construction by contractors and signal crews after speed studies identified that traffic signals would enhance the safety of motorists driving through these areas and entering and exiting these major corridors from side streets,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “We urge motorists to stay alert, reduce speed, and prepare to stop at these signals should they be required to.”

A number of residents of the Idlewood Subdivision in Central are welcoming this new addition. The intersection of Chimney Rock and Highway 69 has long been a dangerous intersection that has seen its fair share of near misses and accidents, some of them fatal.

Message boards are in place at both locations alerting drivers to the new signals.
