Remember When Randall's Grocery Store Was Open in Lufkin?

I recently posted a story about Planet Fitness in Lufkin relocating from North Timberland Drive to the old Conn's location in the Angelina Village Shopping Center. Do you remember what was in that location before Conn's? In 1992, Randall's grocery store had their grand opening in Lufkin.

The History of Randall's Grocery Store in Lufkin

Randall's opened in the Angelina Village Shopping Center in 1992 and remained open until shutting down in 2005. For 13 years, this 29,000+ square-foot grocery store was one of the most modern in the Deep East Texas area. I was a big fan of their extensive produce and meat departments. I liked the big-city shopping experience they brought to a smaller market like Lufkin.

Randall's was a part of the Tom Thumb grocery chain, and by 2005, many of their stores were struggling to make a profit. As a result, many of their shopping centers were closed for good in the Houston and Dallas markets. Lufkin was also part of the closures affecting the Houston area. While serving Deep East Texas, Randall's ran an aggressive advertising campaign. This included testimonials from area shoppers. Other Angelina Village Stores You May Remember

Stores such as Atwoods, Harbor Freight, Ashley Furniture, and Beall's are now mainstays of this shopping center. If you've lived in the Lufkin area for a couple of decades or more, you may remember previous tenants such as the Angelina Twin Cinema, Clarks, and Kmart. There was even a large Blockbuster Video store just off the Loop 287 frontage. Ah yes, VHS rentals...those were the days.
