Taylor’s Swift’s Evolution: From Innocent to Bad Blood, Virtuous to Vengeful
Remember when Taylor Swift was practically synonymous with sunshine and rainbows? Well, we hope you kept the photos to look back on, 'cause those days are long gone.
"I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now ... because she's dead."
That's a line from Taylor Swift's vengeful new song, "Look What You Made Me Do," and the superstar's new video for the track makes it clear that the 27-year-old has shaken off the last vestiges of her once-virginal persona, trading it in for a harder, much darker look that's more in keeping with the take-no-prisoners attitude she's espousing these days. If that line didn't make it clear enough, Swift is kicking asses and literally taking names in "Look What You Made Me Do."
"I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined / I check it once, then I check it twice / Ooh, look what you made me do," she sings.
Swift began her career as a guitar-toting, somewhat awkward teen, and we've seen her grow up in public, slowly reinventing herself through multiple career arcs, but always sticking fairly close to a wholesome public image. The country-turned-pop superstar has always been careful not to swear in public, and until recent years she's never so much as showed off her belly button in costumes.
Well, that Taylor Swift is gone now, and from the looks of things, we won't be seeing her again. We've seen her gradually get a little more experienced and worldly as she's gotten burned in romances and written about it over the years, and Swift's new Reputation album is set to focus on the overwhelming negative press that has swirled around her in recent years, centering around her dating life and her public feuds with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry. Add to that a three-year lawsuit that ended in a lurid public trial in which she delivered scathing testimony and won her claim of assault against a former DJ she accused of groping her in 2013, and it's no wonder she's got a new attitude — and the new look to go along with it.
