94 Point Ride Wins Mutton Busting at Wednesday’s Rodeo in Lufkin

Night number one of the Angelina Benefit Rodeo in Lufkin is in the books, and what a great night it was. Bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding, and a calf scramble were just some of the great features.

As usual, the mutton-busting competition was a crowd favorite. Twelve young cowboys and cowgirls tried their best to stay on the back of a sheep as it raced down the arena floor.

8-year-old Haegan Belschner started the competition with a great ride on 'Sheep Skate' that earned him 87 points. However, Raquell Buenrostro quickly took over the lead with an 89-point ride on 'Woolly Nelson'.

She kept the lead until 6-year-old Sloan Sullivan had the ride of the night, and perhaps the entire rodeo. 'Carrie Underwool' immediately sped out of the chute gate and made a beeline to the herd of sheep toward the middle of the arena floor.

Sullivan stayed squarely on the back of the sheep, perfectly balanced. Even when his sheep ran into the middle of the herd, Sloan stayed aboard and ended up performing a takedown of his sheep. That ride earned him 94 points and a championship trophy.

Other top rides of the night included Jordan Havard (81), Ayson Matthews (80), and Trail Wilkes (87).
