Alan Jackson walks up and down the pier at Coney Island longing for love, or his missing mustache, in the new ‘So You Don’t Have to Love Me Anymore‘ video. While the legend’s facial hair has been going through somewhat of a transition in recent months, the clip below is the first official release in recent memory featuring a sheared Jackson.

It’s far from a clean-shaven look for the hitmaker. His current trim-up resembles the stubble that Toby Keith has been wearing for years, but it’s a long way from the classic lip-topper he’s so closely associated with. Somewhere, Tom Selleck’s stache is mourning his fallen brother.

The video for ‘So You Don’t Have to Love Me Anymore’ is more than just a great unveiling. Jackson walks the pier as images of young lovers fade in and out of time. A couple’s happiness gives way to her tears and his disgust with himself. Much like the song, the video gives no hope for a reconciliation. The melancholy images of a shuttered amusement park in late fall or early winter are meant to linger like a heartbreak — and they do.

‘So You Don’t Have to Love Me Anymore’ is the second single from Jackson’s new album, which has yet to be released. The project is his first since leaving Sony Nashville in January 2011.
