Josh Turner is at the top of his game after his new album, Deep South, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. The singer's sixth studio album, which dropped March 10, marks the singer's follow-up to 2012's Punching Bag.

Turner had a hand in writing five of the album's 11 tracks.

“I’ve lived a lot of life since the release of my last album and I’ve learned a lot during the making of this album,” he says in a press release. “I have grown as a writer and as an artist. It’s been cool to see this culmination of life and lessons and age boiled down into this project and I am really proud of Deep South.”

The album's title track is a song Turner wrote by himself, and he admits that he never intended to include it on his new album.

“It basically is a laundry list of things that I’ve experienced growing up in the deep South and the way life was,” the South Carolina native tells Taste of Country. “I just kind of wanted to paint that picture, kind of a lyrical collage, if you will, or a montage of things that I saw and did and experienced and the culture and the heritage of growing up in the deep South.”

He adds, “I didn’t write it with any commercial aspirations, I wasn’t thinking about the record or anything when I wrote this song. I was writing just to have fun, and that’s what this song is, it’s fun.”

Turner's current single "Hometown Girl" is currently in the Top 10 on the country radio charts.
