April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Family Crisis Center of East Texas has mapped out the entire month with fun, educational, and inspiring ways to keep the prevention and awareness of sexual assault on the minds of our community.

Here is the schedule of events happening next month, and why I think you should gather up your loved ones, and see how The Family Crisis Center has your back.

Here's a clip of James getting mentally psyched up for the 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on the Angelina College Campus. Details on this year's events are in the list below.

    Prevention in the Park

April 5, starting at 12 noon

The theme this year is 'Engaging New Voices,' and everyone will be encouraged to hold up a sign with information about Sexual Assault.

As usual, there will be free food, guest speakers, and live entertainment.

Interact and participate in the mannequin challenge, where we'll all pretend like time has stopped, and broadcast it to social media. Bring everyone you know to make it as big as possible.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

April 11th starting at 10:55 AM

A great way to get folks out and talking is to put grown men in high heels and make 'em walk around the college campus.

Scheduling it at 10:55 am allows for a few straggler college students to join in the fun.

Last year, we had a representative walk the mile in a Sasquatch costume and a pair of heels he purchased the night before. You may just get a glimpse of this "Big Foot" again, if you decide to make the walk for awareness.

Shoes are provided at the event. We still don't know why James bought his own.

    National Denim Day

    April 26th

On Wednesday, April 26th, you are encouraged to wear jeans.

This campaign started almost two decades ago when an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction, because of a pair of jeans. (Click here for more info)

Wearing denim on this day is a visual symbol of protest against misconceptions surrounding sexual assault. There are still many falsehoods surrounding sexual assault The Family Crisis Center can properly educate everyone, making us the first line of defense against sexual assault.
