Former ‘Glee’ Star Noah Guthrie Stuns ‘America’s Got Talent’ With ‘Whipping Post’ [Watch]
Former Glee star Noah Guthrie has been looking for a comeback ever since the show ended in 2015, and he took a major step in that direction on Tuesday night (July 31) with a scorching performance on America's Got Talent.
The 24-year-old singer-songwriter told the judges he "kinda got a little taste of success" with Glee, and "I've been trying to get back to that ever since," adding that he's lucky to always have the support of his father. Simon Cowell told Guthrie that he and the other AGT judges, which included guest judge Martina McBride on Tuesday, had really enjoyed his initial audition, but the famously tough Englishmen only let him get through the first few opening lines of Prince's "I Would Die 4 U" before cutting him off and asking him to choose another song, saying that one would not allow him to stand out.
Guthrie obliged with a stripped-down guitar-and-vocal take on the Allman Brothers Band classic "Whipping Post," which allowed him to demonstrate tension-building control in the verse before letting loose with scorching power in the chorus. Guthrie's undeniable performance earned a standing ovation from the audience, led by Cowell himself, who was clearly pleased at that turn of events.
All of the judges raved about Guthrie's performance, with McBride saying, “Careers change, you know? Things change. You said you were trying to get back to that. Well, I would say from tonight you are well on your way, sir.”
“My only struggle right now is I think that if you go forward, you’ve gotta do something surprising the first time," Cowell observed, adding, "You shouldn’t need a second chance. But having said that, I don’t even think we’ve come close to realizing how good you could be. Well done."
Guthrie made it through to the live rounds of the competition, which begin in mid-August, and he calls it "the second chance I’ve been wanting for a very, very long time."
