It wasn't supposed to end this way.

The schools at Uvalde CISD were into their final days before the start of summer vacation.  Early dismissal for the final day of school was set for this Thursday.  Commencement for the graduating class of Uvalde High School was good to go for this Friday at 7 p.m. at Honey Bowl Stadium.

These final few days of school in Uvalde were to play out just like any other school in Texas.  The tests are over, some of the students are giving gifts to their teachers, it's basically playtime in the classroom during this final week of school. This is the best week of the school year.

That's the way it's supposed to be.  It's not supposed to end this way.

Oh my dear God, please help them.  Please help us.

In reading some of the stories about this mass shooting, I've seen words such as incomprehensible, devastating, senseless, catastrophic, horrific, and tragic. The truth is the words describing this event and the accompanying emotions do not exist.

There are no words that can describe the feeling of dropping your kid off at school and now realizing you will never feel his or her arms around your neck.  There are no words to describe a first responder's feeling of seeing children's bodies lying lifeless in a classroom. When the seniors, faculty, and community members gather for the Class of 2022 graduation, no words will fill the void of emptiness, the numbness that they will feel during this occasion that is usually so festive.

Prayers are powerful, and prayers are needed.  But, even in prayer, we tend to stumble in finding the words to comfort, the words to implore God's intercession.

So, let's not use our words.  Let us use the words that Jesus gave us when teaching us how to pray. Please recite aloud or to yourself, and do so often and offer God's own words towards the healing of Uvalde, and towards our society.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, power and glory, now and forever,
Amen.
