Jennifer Nettles Overcomes Adversity in New Solo Song, ‘I Can Do Hard Things’ [Listen]
Jennifer Nettles has returned to solo work with the release of a new song, "I Can Do Hard Things."
The Sugarland singer dropped the new song at midnight on Friday (Feb. 22). "I Can Do Hard Things" is an anthem for personal empowerment,
"Sometimes I don't like it / But that don't mean I don't love it / Sometimes I get down so low / But that don't mean I can't rise above it," Nettles sings to begin the song. The chorus really drives the message home:
"I can laugh and I can love and I can dream, and I can do hard things," she sings.
Musically the song features Nettles in an impassioned, soulful vocal performance set over a slow tempo and a blend of acoustic and electric guitars, with strings swelling gently in the background to frame the message.
"I Can Do Hard Things" is a special song to Nettles.
"This song for me is a truth telling, a bloodletting, a real-life heart opening to what it means to be a grown woman. It is my offering to honor the reality that, as I like to say, everything is everything," she posted to Twitter.
Nettles released her first solo album, That Girl, in 2014 after Sugarland went on hiatus. She followed that with Playing With Fire in 2016. The duo reunited for a new album, Bigger, in 2018, and Nettles says the release of "I Can Do Hard Things" doesn't mean another layoff for Sugarland.
“We’re constantly doing stuff,” she tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I had this music and I wanted to be able to put it out.”
