Lufkin PD Provide Update On Active Shooter Incident at Hospital
Lufkin Police have provided an update on the concerning events that took place Wednesday morning at a local hospital.
Wednesday at 9:24 a.m., Lufkin Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of an active shooter at CHI St. Luke’s Health-Memorial Lufkin. The incident prompted a coordinated and immediate response:
- The first Lufkin Police officer arrived on the scene by 9:27 a.m., quickly joined by personnel from the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson Police Department, Lufkin ISD PD, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
- By 9:30 a.m., the Lufkin Fire Department had established a staging area with 6 ambulances and were supported by 11 ambulances from Acadian, Allegiance/Angelina County EMS, and Texan EMS. The Texas Department of Emergency Management and the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council also responded. SETRAC coordinated the deployment of 3 ambuses (capable of transporting 12 stretcher patients each), 5 ambulances, and personnel from the Houston area. Lufkin Fire also established a unified command post to streamline communication and resource management.
- Police officers conducted a search for a potential suspect and determined the incident arose from a misunderstanding involving an individual possibly experiencing a mental health crisis.
- The individual was located off the hospital premises, assessed by officers, and confirmed to pose no threat to themselves or the public.
While originating from a misunderstanding, this incident provided a crucial opportunity for local emergency responders and hospital staff to refine and implement their response protocols under realistic conditions.
The collaborative efforts of all involved and the proactive readiness of neighboring communities underscore our region’s resilience and preparedness in times of crisis.
